Quick Comparison of Major Mushroom Databases

Each mushroom database serves a different purpose. Here is what the major platforms do best and where their limitations lie.

iNaturalist

Type: Community observation platform Best for: Recent observations, photographs, seasonal activity, local records, and community-supported identification. Main limitation: Identification quality varies, and some observations lack the photographs or field details needed for reliable identification.

Mushroom Observer

Type: Mycology-focused observation platform Best for: Detailed fungal observations, identification discussions, field notes, microscopy, and communication among people specifically interested in fungi. Main limitation: Activity and geographic coverage can vary depending on the region and fungal group.

GBIF

Type: Species-occurrence aggregator Best for: Exploring geographic distributions, finding institutional records, locating preserved specimens, and reviewing historical observations. Main limitation: Records may be duplicated, outdated, geographically imprecise, or based on identifications that have not been reevaluated.

MycoBank
